Nun & Qalam:
A Calligraphic Learning Series

Nun & Qalam is a six-book instructional series exploring the beauty, history, and practice of Islamic calligraphy. Each book focuses on one of the six classical scripts — Kufic, Naskh, Muhaqqaq, Thuluth, Diwani, and Ruq’ah — combining historical context, visual analysis, and guided writing practice. The series is accompanied by an introductory book covering Islamic art, the Qur’anic foundations of calligraphy, and the origins of each script.

Through extensive research into Islamic art, typography, cultural symbolism, and traditional calligraphic methods, I developed a unified visual identity, custom logo, heritage-inspired color palette, and structured learning system across the series. This project brought together my background in graphic design and my personal interest in Islamic art to create an educational experience that is both culturally meaningful and accessible to beginners.

Logo Development

The Nun & Qalam logo draws inspiration from the Qur’anic verse “Nun. By the Pen,” reflecting the project’s connection to writing, learning, and sacred tradition. I refined the design through several iterations, ultimately choosing a more balanced, contemporary interpretation of the Arabic letter Nun paired with clean Latin typography. The final mark creates harmony between heritage and modern design, symbolizing a brand that honors Islamic calligraphy while remaining accessible to today’s learners.

The Six Scripts

Each booklet focuses on a distinct classical script, with its own letterforms, proportions, and writing characteristics. The interior layouts were designed to support the unique qualities of each script while maintaining a consistent visual system across the series.
