4AD Calendar Posters
4AD Calendar Posters is a poster series inspired by the experimental and unconventional design approach of Vaughan Oliver, the influential art director behind much of the visual identity of 4AD Records. Oliver was known for creating imagery that felt abstract, atmospheric, and open to interpretation, often allowing the visual to exist beyond a literal representation of the music.
Inspiration
For this project, I created four calendar posters inspired by the Pixies albums Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and Bossanova.
I listened closely to the songs from each album, selecting specific lyrics and ideas that stood out to me and jotting down whatever visual concepts came to mind. Some ideas were direct interpretations of the lyrics, while others were inspired by an idea, feeling, or association connected to them.

Selected Posters
Month: May
Song:I’ve Been Tired
Album: Come On Pilgrim
Lyric: “Breasts like a cluster of grapes.”
This poster was inspired directly by the imagery in the lyric. I translated the unusual comparison into a visual concept, using the lyric as the starting point for exploring shape, form, and composition.
Month: June
Song: I’ve Been Tired
Album: Come On Pilgrim
Lyric: “Voice like Milk”
For June, I focused on the unusual imagery of the phrase “Voice like Milk.” The lyric led me to explore the idea of visualizing something intangible through texture and form, creating an interpretation based on the association the words evoked.
Month: October
Song: Something Against You
Album: Surfer Rosa
Rather than pulling from a specific lyric, this poster was inspired by the title “Something Against You.” The phrase immediately brought political imagery to mind, leading me toward the visual language of newspapers, headlines, and printed media. I developed the poster as a collage to reflect that association.
